GRLPWR: chicks you should know

Tamara Mellon

Tamara Mellon may be considered a household name if you’re heavy into fashion, but for those less familiar, allow me to introduce you. Tamara’s career immensely developed following her previous position as co-founder of renowned female footwear company, Jimmy Choo. Following years of unparalleled recognition, Tamara took it upon herself to launch her own brand by rebooting her footwear business under her very own name. After one failed attempt, Tamara has come back stronger than ever, creating a direct-to-consumer model and throwing the conventional rules of business out the window.  Besides selling absolutely fire merchandise, Tamara (based on her own experience of being paid less than male colleagues while at Jimmy Choo) has made equal pay a priority of her new venture. On Equal Pay Day she offers shoppers a discount of 20 percent (representing the gap between what men and women earn). Mellon also initiated a campaign called Friends with Benefits that promotes other companies with mom-friendly policies like maternity leave and fertility treatments. Oh, and because Tamara is not a U.S. citizen, she insisted her entire team vote in her place and shut down the TM offices for Election Day. “I’m unable to vote in today’s election as I am not a U.S. citizen. So instead, I’m urging you to own your vote. To show up to the polls is to show up for yourself” – Tamara Mellon

Uh huh honey!
